Annotation: The main task of the opposition in Myanmar now is to amend the military Constitution before general elections (2015). In accordance with the Constitution a quarter of Parliament seats are reserved for military officers. Article 436 of the charter states that key amendments to the Basic Law can only be introduced if more than 75% of Parliament supports it - a provision that gives the military a de facto veto. Thein Sein’s government has been facing sustained pressure from opposition groups to reform the military-drafted 2008 2Constitution to allow for free and fair elections next year.
