Armed conflict over the Spratley Islands in 1988: the reaction of Vietnam

Annotation: This paper dwells on historical events connected with the disputed islands in the South China Sea and gives analyses of Vietnamese mass media publications on the armed conflict with China over the Spratley Islands in March 1988. The author also consideres Vietnam-China conflict in the Paracel Islands in 1974. It is of special interest because to-day facing its 40th “anniversary” Hanoi treats the events differently from the times when the country was represented by the rival regime of the Republic Vietnam (South Vietnam).
